Education Not Allowed

Yesterday, public school teachers throughtout Nigeria implemented a strike based on not receiving a wage increase in January 2009. In August 2008, governors throughout the nation promised to teachers that they would receive a 27.5 percent wage increase if they ended a 2-month strike that had started in June 2008. It was understood that teachers would receive this raise in January 2009, but the agreement was not honored.

As I walked past a school yesterday morning, I saw several children in uniform, backpacks on backs, and lunch pales that were probably full of rice in hand standing outside of their classrooms waiting to be taught. I was saddened because of these students' desire to learn but no one around to give them that day's lesson.

Then I began to think about why we, as humanity, fail to invest in our nation's future, regardless of where that nation is? Why don't we, as humans and as leaders, think that good and equal education is necessary for all students to further the beautiful nations of this world? How do people really think that a nation will continue to move forward if the youth of the nation don't have knowledge to critically analyze and to draw conclusions from? Knowledge doesn't grow on trees like the mangos, oranges, or apples of our Earth. It has to be shared...by those who have knowledge.
